| Researching old manuscripts
In autumn 2008, trac held a fascinating international forum as guests of the Wales Millennium Centre, on the theme of discovering hidden musical treasures.
Cass Meurig spoke on the challenging experience of turning an obscure handwritten manuscript, the 18th century John Thomas collection of fiddle pieces, into a useable tunebook and resource for contemporary fiddlers, illustrating her talk with a demonstration of tunes on fiddle and crwth.
Loeiz er Braz came over from Brittany, where he is the national secretary of Dastum (the Breton folk music development organisation) and chair of Dastum Bro Ereg, his regional Dastum. A collector, singer and piper, Loeiz gave us a comprehensive overview of the musical traditions of Brittany and the work of Dastum over the past twenty years in preserving and promoting them.
Mike O’Connor (pictured left) is a stalwart of Cornish music, well-known as a researcher, publisher and performer. He had much practical advice for musical treasure-hunters. On the trail of lost sources, he has unearthed unknown collections in local libraries and great houses. He told the tale of a manuscript book of tunes found in a jumble sale, which turned out to be a completely unknown fiddler’s tunebook from 1808 - of great local significance, both musically and in the context of social history. Go looking, he said; there are manuscripts waiting to be found. You can read the full text of his talk by clicking on the link below.
