Wales @ London, March 10 2013

A whole day celebrating some of the very best of Welsh folk music at the home of the EFDSS.

Calan : Jamie Smith's Mabon : Les Barker : RagFoundation : Alaw : Jack Harris : Bragod : Parti Cut Lloi : DnA : CerddCegin : Blanche Rowen & Mike Gulston

A family Twmpath/Ceilidh with Grassie Busville, clog dancing workshops with Huw Williams and family craft sessions making a flatpack Mari Lwyd

There are concerts throughout the day and evening, from big high-energy bands like Calan, Jamie Smith’s Mabon and the Rags to award-winning London based singer-songwriter Jack Harris.

Slide1

Les Barker (alternative Poet Laureate and self-declared born-again Welshman) will be familiar to many from the folk festival scene. Since moving to Wrexham he’s not only learnt Welsh but has mastered the intricacies of writing poetry in the ancient bardic discipline of cynghanedd - find out how and why!
He'll be giving a talk and also performing on the main stage.

Lots to do for all the family! Learn about the Mari Lwyd tradition - a seasonal custom involving a horse's skull on a pole, songs and a verse contest; Wales' equivalent to the Padsow Obby Oss - and make a mini-Mari to take home. Try Welsh dancing at the Twmpath (ceilidh) or the clogging workshop.

Early music enthusiasts can trace the origins of string music and mediæval cerdd dant back to Pythagoras in a lecture-demonstration by Robert Evans of Bragod, who also give a lunchtime performance of their show Adar/Birds.

Meanwhile downstairs, random acts of music will be happening, with tunes and songs from DnA, Cerdd Cegin and Blanche Rowen & Mike Gulston plus sessions and singing, including members of harmony group Parti Cut Lloi bursting into song in the bar at some point. So bring your instruments and your voices if you’d like to join in.

About the Artist Development Programme – Am Rhaglen Datblygu Artistiaid

Background

WOMEX, the world’s biggest trade event for world/folk/roots and traditional music is coming to Wales in October 2013. Over four days 3,000 musicians, festivals, promoters, agents and music businesses will meet, network and negotiate deals, licenses, tours, and more at the Motopoint Arena in Cardiff. In the evenings over 50 showcase events will highlight music from all over the world.

Mae WOMEX, sef digwyddiad masnachol mwyaf y byd ym maes cerddoriaeth byd/gwerin/gwreiddiau a thraddodiadol, yn dod i Gymru ym mis Hydref 2013. Dros cyfnod o bedwar diwrnod bydd 3,000 o gerddorion, gwyliau, hyrwyddwyr, asiantiaid a busnesau cerdd yn cyfarfod, yn rhwydweithio ac yn trafod cytundebau, trwyddedau, teithiau a rhagor yn Arena Motorpoint yng Nghaerdydd. Gyda’r nos, bydd dros 50 o ddigwyddiadau arddangos yn amlygu cerddoriaeth o bedwar ban byd.

We in Wales are proud of all our musics from Cerdd Dant to Soca from Tiger Bay. This is an opportunity for all of our musicians who play world music (everything that isn’t classical or pop/rock) to take part in this event. We see this as a catalyst to begin the investment in a Welsh music industry that all of our musicians can be a part of.

Mae Cymru yn falch o’i thraddodiadau cerdd, sy’n amrywio o Gerdd Dant hyd at Soca o Tiger Bay Caerdydd. Dyma gyfle i’n holl gerddorion sy’n ymwneud â cerddoriaeth byd (popeth, hynny yw, ag eithrio cerddoriaeth glasurol neu bop/roc) i fod yn rhan o’r digwyddiad hwn. Gwelwn hwn fel catalydd i ddechrau buddsoddi mewn diwydiant cerdd Cymreig y gall ein holl gerddorion fod yn rhan ohono.

The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) have funded this programme to give our musicians an advantage in WOMEX and beyond by enhancing business, performance, marketing and communication skills.

Mae Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru (CCC) wedi noddi'r rhaglen hon i rhoi mantais i’n cerddorion ym marchnad WOMEX a thu hwnt trwy wella eu sgiliau busnes, perfformio, marchnata a chyfathrebu.

trac, the development agency for folk music in Wales have made a partnership with Bangor University School of Music to deliver the programme supported by the WOMEX legacy group. This group is made up of venues, funders, businesses and organisations that all want to use WOMEX as a start point in building our music industry.

Mae trac, corff datblygu cerddoriaeth werin Cymru, wedi creu partneriaeth gydag Ysgol Cerddoriaeth Prifysgol Bangor i gyflwyno'r rhaglen gyda chefnogaeth Cerdd Cymru:Music Wales a grŵp waddol WOMEX. Mae’r grŵp hwn yn cynnwys lleoliadau, cyllidwyr, busnesau a mudiadau sydd am ddefnyddio WOMEX fel man cychwyn i adeiladu’n diwydiant cerdd yma yng Nghymru.

This programme is for all of you who want to progress your career as a musician. Space however is limited. We aim to select eight acts of varying sizes to be the core of the project. This can be duos, soloists, groups etc. The project is open to musicians whether full or part-time who make “world music”. World music is not a definition but a broad label that mostly includes music that comes from a particular place or community. It includes folk, traditional, jazz, reggae, acoustic music, klezmer, bhangra. Welsh language or Urdu, Pashtun or English or for that matter any other language is not important. The only genres deliberately excluded from world music are classical and pop/rock. This is because they have their own support infrastructure and markets.

Mae’r rhaglen hon ar gyfer pawb sydd am wella’i yrfa gerddorol, ond mae terfyn ar y nifer y gallwn ei dderbyn. Ein hamcan yw dewis wyth “act”: p’un ai yn unawd, yn ddeuawd neu’n fand enfawr i fod yn graidd i’r prosiect, ac ‘rydym yn croesawu cerddorion llawn neu rhan-amser sydd yn cynhyrchu “cerddoriaeth byd”. Nid diffiniad yw’r term ‘cerddoriaeth byd’, ond yn hytrach label eang sydd gan fwyaf yn cynnwys cerddoriaeth sy’n deillio o le neu gymuned benodol. Mae’n cynnwys canu gwerin, cerdd draddodiadol, jazz, reggae, acwstig, klezmer, bhangra a rhagor. Yn yr iaith Gymraeg neu Wrdw, Pashtŵn neu Saesneg, neu unrhyw iaith arall o ran hynny - nid yw’r cyfrwng iaith yn gwneud fawr o wahaniaeth. Yr unig ddau genre a eithrir o’r categori ‘cerddoriaeth byd’ yw cerddoriaeth glasurol a pop/roc, am y rheswm amlwg bod ganddynt ill dau eu seilwaith cynnal a’u marchandoedd eu hun.

Welcome Back

Welcome back everybody! Now for a look at 2013. It's going to be a full year full of projects old and new

P7170022

10 Mewn Bws - 10 In a Bus- is  physical and emotional journey through our traditions. We'll take ten musicians around Wales meeting our tradition bearers and then collaborating to produce new songs and interpretationsof our own common cultural heritage.

10th March 2013 will see a day of Welsh music in London. We have partnered up with the English Folk Song and Dance Society who have asked us to programme a day of concerts, dances, lectures and workshops at their base, Cecil Sharp House in Camden.

The Tunechain  is a series of short films commissioned from Gerard KilBride and Rhodri Smith. Beginning with Robert Evans they trace the process of learning and sharing that uniquley identifies traditional music. Each film will be released here, one-per week and on our YouTube Channel.

Gwledd is intended to balance the Big Experiment. Coming from our Tradiator Days we want to establish one day a year when everyone we have worked with can get together, sharen this year's triumphs and build ideas for the future.

We are finalising an application to Merthyr Tydfil. building on teh huge growth in interest in our traditions we will put a development officer in th borough to work within the four rural wards. We'll be building linkages across the borough to embed participation in our traditions into the life of our host communities. We'll also be trialling a dedicated youth strand modelled on the Feisean: a combination of song, music and dance that engages young people in schools, community groups and a residential event for young people.

WOMEX will be coming to Cardiff in October 2013. It's the biggest market and networking event for world music. More than 3,000 music professionals, agents, artists, journalists and more will gather in the Motorpoint Arena and the Wales Millennium Centre for four days to network and negotiate. We have been given the opportunity to run an Artist Development Programme to offer an unfair advantage for up to 25 musicians from Wales. Details are available from the link above, from Arts Council of WalesCerdd CymrudocxApplications are available from this download or from the link from this article. Pretty soon, we'll be looking at how to build upon the Big Experiment and integrate all the ideas that have come from the Sesiyn yng Nghymru project.
Tŷ Gwerin is going once again to Eisteddfod yr Urdd and Eisteddfod Genedlaethol this year and perhaps she'll find another home.

We have an ongoing communications training programme this spring so look out for changes to the way we use twitterfacebook, our website and ontrac.
